Anyone care to talk about and explain why...
WHAT IS TRUTH?
It’s one of the most famous phrases ever uttered. And the thought behind it serves a purpose. It serves to remind us that there’s truth and then there’s truth.
Stealing is wrong.
Manipulation of facts is proper for cementing a country’s nationalism.
Burning your wife for non-payment of dowry is immoral.
You should never disagree with authority.
Your outward appearance must conform to that of the community.
Let’s face it: the definition of insanity is determined by the person who holds the keys to the cage imprisoning others.
In the United States –and in most of the West—we are accustomed to a tradition that debates and works to harmonize beliefs to a common understanding of Truth…of what’s right and wrong.
The good part is that we do debate these things. The challenge? Despite what we say we believe, we are not always tolerant of those within our own borders who differ with the commonly acknowledged Truth.
And that Truth is often very different in other parts of the world…that is the Truth that relates to what is a moral life, to how you engage with your neighbors, what the rights of the government are, what rights your community has to dictate how you dress…or whether you’re allowed to divorce and so on.
Within the borders of this site, there’s an understanding that to insist that such-and-such a truth comes from some supreme energy source or from a humanist perspective , by definition, invalidates the power of the argument. To insist, for example, that Mary must agree with Jack because of some fundamental belief of Jack’s is to deny Mary’s fundamental right to her own belief…and, therefore TRUTH.
There may be Absolute Truth in which the Universe traffics in. It is more than foolish to assert that we have access to it: it’s a vain exercise because it inherently disrespects the rights of your fellow earthlings.
OUR PURPOSE is to ask questions, to be provocative. Sometimes we will demonstrate prejudices, but these will more usually crop up in cases where a particular issue is not getting nearly enough exposure or in which we feel the larger community is foreclosing on its obligation to think. Someone has to make sure the minority perspective is getting heard!
